No New Games Month – 1 Week In
If you have read my recent blog post Gamer Challenge – No New Games Month or if you follow me on Instagram / Twitter you will know that I am in the midst of a gaming challenge that I have set for myself. The name of this challenge is NNGMonth (No new games month). The idea is that for the month of August I am buying no new games or consoles and playing games in my collection that I have never played.
- No purchasing of games – physical or digital for 1 month – from 1st August to 31st August.
- No purchasing of any new games consoles for 1 month – not including console peripherals like controllers, memory cards, power supplies.
- This does not apply to items I already have on order from Ebay or similar.
- For the month of August I will only be playing video games that I have never played before in my collection.
Week 1 Check In
It is just over a week since I started the challenge so I decided to check in to see where I am.
So far it has been difficult to stay away from my usual haunts like the charity shops and pawn shops but I am keeping myself occupied with other hobbies and what not. I am deliberately avoiding these places as it might be too difficult to resist the temptation to splurge!
Instead, I am actually playing my games more. I am also spending time on my other hobbies and interests and getting out of the house (a little more anyway) to go to the cinema or to go for a cycle on the Greenway.
In terms of making my way through my gaming backlog, this is going pretty well I must say, even just a week in. I have been able to remember the challenge in the back of my mind and I am pretty encouraged to make an effort to try new games. I have already played a variety of games on a variety of consoles and devices which has been great fun.
For instance, I have started to play through the Mass Effect series of games for the PS3. The concept of this game is brilliant and very immersive however the difficulty and issues with game controls and mechanics are making things less fun. That is all a topic for another day though so I won’t bore you with that.
I’ve also tried out a number of games on the PSP including The Simpsons Game, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Daxter.
As I have made it known across the land of the internet that I am taking part in this challenge, I find that I am more accountable and therefore making a great effort to keep going with this. I am motivated to try any and all of my games that I have never played before, the only limit being the amount of time I can dedicate to it!
Plan for the next few weeks
The first few days were a bit shaky understandably as I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. Now that I am more immersed in the challenge I think it is definitely achievable.
For the next few weeks I am going to be doing more of the same in terms of playing new games. Though, I might limit the amount of time I am spending on a game rather than completing the entire game. Hopefully that way I can get a taster of a larger number of games that I can go back to later.
