PlayStation Plus Games – June 2019

PlayStation Plus Games

Before this month’s line up of PS Plus games was announced, the question most people were asking was can PlayStation redeem themselves following a few months of less than desirable PS Plus games. I had been wondering this myself for the last while but I think the May line up is pretty good all in all so let’s run through this month’s PS Plus games and see how they fare.

May’s PlayStation Plus Games

The two games offered this month are:

  • Borderlands: The Handsome Collection
  • Sonic Mania

These 2 games are valued at €79.98 (which is a considerable increase in value from last month), but are free for you PlayStation Plus subscribers this month.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

Release Date – March 2015

Developers – Gearbox Software

Publishers – 2K Games

Price before PS Plus – €59.99

Genre – Action Role Playing / First Person Shooter

The Borderlands series of games are first-person shooters set on the fictional planet of Pandora. Players choose from a roster of characters with different strengths / attribute types and complete a variety of missions, single player or co-op, in order to progress through the game.

The most unique and enticing thing about the Borderlands games is definitely the graphics. The Borderlands games make use of Cell-Shading like graphics in order to create a comic book styled design. This was definitely what attracted me to these games in the first place and the game play itself was what got me hooked.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection combines 2 games – Borderlands 2 and Borderlands the Pre-Sequel as well as all accompanying DLC. As you can imagine, this is quite the collection of content which is estimated at taking about 48 hours to complete the story modes alone. (See How long to beat Borderlands 2 and How long to beat Borderlands: The Pre-sequel).

Similar Games – This is an interesting one to talk about. If you are just looking for other games with the same aesthetics, all of the Telltale games e.g. Tales from the Borderlands, are a pretty good similarity.

If you are looking for games with the same style of game play I would argue a game like Apex legends is pretty similar in terms of loot collection and first person shooting style.

Metacritic Score 82/100 – Borderlands: The Handsome Collection – Metacritic

My Take

This is definitely a great choice for this month’s line up of games. I was pretty close to going out and buying this game pretty recently so I’m glad I resisted. The timing of this game makes absolute sense also with the release of Borderlands 3 in September. This game will definitely help in building up the hype.

Release Date – August 2017

Developers – PagodaWest Games, Headcannon

Publishers – SEGA

Price before PS Plus – €19.99

Genre – Platform adventure

Released in 2017, Sonic Mania is an homage to the original Sonic the Hedgehog games from the Sega Genesis era. You play as Sonic the Hedgehog and his companions Tails and Knuckles as they attempt to defeat their foe the evil Doctor Eggman and his henchmen.

As fans of the game and indeed the Sonic series will know, this is a side-scrolling platformer which sees you jump, dodge and maneuver your way through each level in search of gold rings and all manner of power ups.

Similar Games – It has to be said that if you enjoyed this game it’s worth checking out the original games on the Sega Genesis or via emulation if you don’t happen to own one. As for similar PS4 games: Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, Pandemonium and Sonic Forces.

Metacritic Score 86/100 – Sonic Mania – Metacritic

Trophy Hunting

  • 18 trophies can be earned from this game
  • Average Completion: 24%
  • Platinum Achievers: No platinum trophies with this game

My Take

I have played this game for a little under an hour now and it seems quite fun and addictive. I’ll be honest, I didn’t play any Sonic games when I was younger so I may not feel the same level of nostalgia that many people do but this still seems like a solid game. Many fans of the series consider this game a return to form for Sonic which is pretty impressive for such a game.

Conclusions and Observations

Overall it has to be said that this month’s games are an improvement on previous months, at least in my opinion. These are well selected games with a pretty good scoring on Metacritic. Personally I don’t own either of these games so I am pretty happy with this selection as well. I’m looking forward to playing these games in depth this month, especially Borderlands!
